Murray River SA
Pic: P.S. Melbourne in Mildura by Longhair
The Murray River is an Australian icon and the country’s most important waterway. From its source in the Australian Alps (Victorian-NSW border) it meanders its way along the two state borders into SA’s Riverland and Murraylands regions before flowing out to sea at Goolwa a distance of almost 1 200 km. The Murray was first discovered by explorers Hume & Hovell in 1824 who named it Hume. It was renamed (1830) to honour a leading politician at the time and saw hundreds of large paddlesteamers ply its waters in its heydey.
